The Minnesota Indian Women’s Resource Center (MIWRC) is a
non-profit social and education service center located in
the Phillips neighborhood of Minneapolis. MIWRC has a 2
million dollar annual budget (State and Foundation Grants
and Donations), and employs over 50 full and part-time
professional staff. Minneapolis, in Hennepin County,
Minnesota is the primary geographic area that we serve.
Minneapolis has the third largest urban American Indian
population in the United States. Our youth population under
age 18 is 3,818 making American Indians proportionately the
youngest population in the state. There are 55,000 American
Indians in Minnesota. The population of American Indians in
Hennepin County is 11,163 (Census 2000).
MIWRC serves American Indian women and their families,
primarily those who live in Hennepin County, but we also
provide services to Indian women from throughout the Twin
Cities metro area. Some services (primarily chemical
dependency treatment and family reunification services)
are at times provided to American Indians who live on one
of the eleven reservations located within Minnesota. Our
agency’s mission is to assist American Indian Women and
their families with the ability to enjoy a better quality
of life. Founded in 1984, MIWRC provides a broad range of
programs for American Indian women; including chemical
dependency treatment, family services, child care, housing
assistance, counseling, library and informational services,
child advocacy and training in parenting, education in
childhood development, Indian cultural issues, and other
family and community topics. We do extensive training in
the Indian community on the topics of child development,
FAS/FAE, chemical dependency issues, healthy parenting,
mental health (including dual diagnosis), and cultural
diversity. Our programs are based on the traditional values
of the Ojibwe, which incorporate an egalitarian system of
community living, and are shared by many other Indian Tribes
and communities. In 2000, the agency served over 2,021
clients.
